La ciudad de las Incas, Machu Picchu, Peru

On May 12, 2016 I woke up to a belly full of butterflies and a body jumping with excitement. I was exhausted from four long days of hiking, camping, cold and buggy weather, but it didn't matter. Dressed and ready to go, I made my way onto a bus that would take me to the city of the Incan gods. I felt like I was living in a dream world. I was going to see something I had waited for my entire life to see.

After a short bus ride we went through the entrance and then started to hike up a short, but steep, path. Near the top, my breathing grew short and heavy. My body ached with pain from the days before and my heart screamed with joy and happiness. Slowly, I walked with my head down out into the open and paused right before a drop off. Then, with one long breath, I lifted my head and looked out at the home of the omnipresent gods of the Incan civilization, Machu Picchu.

The Colonization of the Spiritual City

Hiram Bingham discovered Machu Picchu on July 24th, 1911 in Peru. The city was built on top of a mountain range above a sacred valley and in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest in Peru. It was once an Incan city for the gods of the Incan civilization. The city was designed to encompass the four directions: North, East, West, and South and to honor the spirit of the Pachamama, mother earth. The infrastructure was built with precision and clarity. Each building represents something significant. Each structure resembles the history and culture of the Incan people.

As I walked through the city, I imagined what it was like to live in this city 500 years ago. The city was full of secrets and mysteries. There are so many questions connected to the magic of the city. If the Incan people, whom were known by other Peruvians as gods, built Machu Picchu then why would mortals be honored with the answers of the city? The mysteries protect the city from the intrusion of the world.

With each step further into the city, I could feel it’s power move through me. If was as if I stepped into a time of simplicity and great intelligence. A time where people honored the earth, spoke with the spirits, and knew the importance of tradition, culture, and honor.

The History of the Incan People

When the Spaniards started to attack Cusco, the leader of the Incan people, escaped into the rainforests of Peru with his people. He took over 200,000 people with him. They went from city to city walking twice as slow as it would normally take. But still the Spaniards did not reach him. To confuse the Spaniards the Incan people traveled through the jungle and disappeared.

People have been exploring the jungle for hundreds of years. They have searching everywhere for remains of the Incans but nothing has ever been found. Some say, that when the planets align, and the world moves into a time of drastic change, the Incan people will return and take their rightful place in Machu Picchu.
