Bogota, Colombia is the capital of Colombia. It is home to around 8 million people and is located in the Northern part of South America. The city of Bogota is filled with lots of interesting things to do and see.
10 THINGS TO DO IN BOGOTA, COLOMBIA
El Monserrate
El Monserrato is the mountain that overlooks the entire city of Bogota. At the top of El Monserrato you can eat at a couple of restaurants, visit an old colonial church and of course see the view of the whole city.
To get to the top you have three options:
- Take a Cable Car
The cable car is the most popular option and the one that I took. It costs 21,000 pesos to go up and down. Your ticket is valid for one day and for one ride up and down.
- Take a Train
The train is a quick five minute ride up to the top and costs 21,000 pesos to go up and down.
- Walk
There is a path you can take from the bottom to the top of el monserrato. Depending on how fast you go it can take around 1 hour and a half.
El museo del oro
The museo del oro translates to the Gold Museum in english. It is filled with ancient gold from the colonial period and even before. Many indigenous people used gold as a resource to make jewelry, art, weapons, clothes and so much more. The museum costs 4,000 pesos to enter and has three levels to explore.
El museo de Botero
Located in La candelaria, El museo de bellas artes is most famous for the collection of work by Fernando Botero, a colombian artist from medellin. It is free to enter the museum and you can walk around to see two floors filled with contemporary art.
La candelaria
La candelaria is the oldest part of Bogota and a popular attraction for all tourists visiting the city. In la candelaria you can find delicious food and adorable cafes, beautiful street art, handmade gifts and jewelry and lots of hostels.
The Original Graffiti Tour
The Original Graffiti is exactly what it sounds like, a tour of the Street Art and Graffiti of Bogota. The tour is a free walking tour that focuses on the street art around downtown Bogota and la candelaria. It lasts around 2 hours and 45 minutes and at the end of the tour you can give a donation of 10-40,000 pesos based on your satisfaction with the tour. The Graffiti tour runs twice a day, once at 10:00 and once at 2:00. You meat at the Simon Bolivar courtyard by the statue of Bolivar.
Free City Walking Tour
The free city walking tour is a tour of the city of Bogota. On the tour you can learn about the history of the city and see beautiful works of art. Like the graffiti tour, the City Tour survives off of donations of 10-40,000 pesos. You pay as much as you want depending on your satisfaction with the tour.
Nightlife
Bogota has a great night life going for it. One of the best places to go is called Teatron. This club costs 70,000 pesos on Fridays and 90,000 on Saturdays but once you are inside it is an open bar. What makes this club special is that it has multiple rooms with different music. This way there is something for everyone.
Another club to try is Andres Carne de Res. Fridays are 80.000 mil and Saturdays are 90.000 mil. If you stay at Botanico Hostel you can go with the hostel on a party bus to and from the club. Entrance fee is included in the price as well as shots and transportation.
Day Trip to La Chorrera
La Chorrera is the largest waterfall in all of Colombia and it is right outside of Bogota. To reach the entrance of La Chorrera you can take a bus for around 40 minutes out into the countryside of Colombia. You can then either walk to the entrance, a 2 hour walk, or a taxi which is 25,000 COP. Once you reach the entrance the hike to the waterfall is roughly 1 hour. It costs 15,000 COP to enter the park. If you want to camp it will cost another 15,000 COP per night.
El museo nacional
The National Museum is open from Tuesdays to Sundays. It costs 4,000 COP to enter for adults, Students are 3,000 COP, youth (5-12) are 2,000COP and Seniors are free. You must have a valid ID to prove you are a senior citizen. If you are an english speaker there is a free tour on Tuesdays at 4:00. In addition, the museum is free on Sundays so if you are looking to save some money, Sunday is s the day to visit.

Parque Simon Bolivar
Located on Calle 53 and Avenue Esmeralda, Parque simon bolivar is open from 6:00 am -6:00pm Monday – Sunday. The park is a beautiful symbol of Bogota and a great place to spend a Saturday or Sunday. If you pack a lunch you can have a picnic on the grass and enjoy a sunny day in Bogota.
Extra Activity: The Botanical Gardens
The gardens are located at Cl. 63 #6895, Bogotá, Colombia. They are open Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm and then 1:00 – 5:00pm . Then on weekends and festivals the gardens are open 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. It costs 3.500 mil for adults and 1.500 for children. The Botanical Gardens are a great place to go and relax, grab a lunch and enjoy good company.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
Overall, Bogota is a city filled with life, culture and interesting people. If you are traveling for a long time, Bogota is a great place to stay for a bit and relax. Otherwise, if you have limited time you can see most of Bogota in three or four days.
